Brain Protein Clues Found in Children of Affected Dads
United States: New research from Neurology reveals that people with fathers who had Alzheimer’s disease show elevated risks of developing brain changes known as tau proteins which serve as markers for Alzheimer’s disease evolution.
Mother vs. Father: A Shift in Understanding
Traditionally, scientists believed maternal inheritance played the stronger genetic role in Alzheimer’s risk. However, this new research led by Dr. Sylvia Villeneuve from McGill University surprised experts by showing greater tau spread in participants with paternal history.
Inside the Study
- 243 participants with family history of Alzheimer’s
- All showed no cognitive decline at study start (average age: 68)
- Followed for nearly 7 years
- 71 participants developed signs of mild cognitive impairment

Those with high tau levels and a father with Alzheimer’s showed greater memory and thinking decline over time.
Gender Differences Matter
The study also found that women’s brains accumulated more tau overall, supporting previous research suggesting faster cognitive decline in women once Alzheimer’s sets in.
“This emphasizes the need for personalized approaches based on genetic and biological differences,” said Dr. Villeneuve.
