United States: A new study warns that certain and some specific kind of chemicals found in sunscreen, makeup, and other personal care products could be harmful to pregnancies.
As reported by HealthDay, these chemicals are also called phenols and paraben which can possibly increase the risk of high blood pressure in pregnant ladies by almost 57 percent, especially between 24 to 28 weeks of pregnancy. The study was shared on August 14 in a journal called Environmental Health Perspectives.
Phenols and Parabens Widespread in Personal Care Products
“We found chemicals in everyday soaps, lotions, makeup, sunscreen and other personal care products and consumer products [that] increased risk of hypertension” among a study group of pregnant women in Puerto Rico, said study lead researcher Julia Varshavsky. She’s basically an assistant professor of health sciences and at the North-eastern University in Boston.
Phenols and the parabens are basically used as UV filters in the sunscreens and to also ultimately stops the growth of the harmful mold and the bacteria in the makeup and cosmetics said the researchers.
This Parabens alone are used in about almost 80 percent of the personal care products said the researcher’s team in the background notes.
Phenols and parabens link to the hypertension in the pregnancy is troubling the high blood pressure during the pregnancy reduces the blood flow to the placenta so the fetus might wind up the starved of oxygen and nutrients as well.
Health Risks for Mothers and Babies
As a result, the fetus might suffer from the restricted growth and the low birth weight, and the premature birth explained by the health experts.
It’s almost dangerous for expecting moms as well increasing their risk of the complications like preeclampsia and stroke.
Both the mother and they will also have an increased likelihood that they will suffer more from the high blood pressure and the diabetes and the heart disease long after pregnancy.
Importance of Awareness
Looking at the chemicals at in the personal skin care products “is really very important for that pregnant individual because women on the average use at least 12 personal care products a day, Varshavsky noted.
And the fact that these can increase and may increase the risk of hypertension during pregnancy is important and because that sets the stage for lifelong health in the both the mother and the infant.
