United States: The recent discovery of this variant, identified in Thailand and linked to an ongoing outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo, has heightened global attention.
This new strain has now spread to at least 12 African countries, one European nation, and Thailand. In 2024 alone, over 17,000 cases and 517 deaths have been reported, with more than 95% of these cases occurring in Congo.
Sweden Reports New Case
As reported by USA Today, Last week Sweden became the first country outside Africa to report new infection using the strain Ib which infected a person who had visited the continent. The previous day, World Health Organisation had announced outbreak of mpox virus as a public health emergency of international concern.
WHO’s Stance and Virus Background
Thus, although Hans Kluge, the WHO regional director for Europe, denied the possibility of mpox following COVID’s lethal trajectory, he added, “We can and must address mpox collectively, focusing on regions and continents. ’’Formerly called monkeypox because of the mode of its discovery in 1958, in the animal called monkey, mpox is a virus that belongs to the same family as smallpox.
In particular, it has a zoonotic transmission and can be passed in between humans as well as animals, humans and humans contiguous through physical contact or contact with some body fluids, or through contact with surfaces or also some objects contaminated with the virus. Mpox isolates have been divided into two clades: clade I and clade II: the second one causes generally milder disease and mortality is relatively low.
Symptoms and Transmission
The disease control and prevention states that mpox characteristically causes a rash on the hands, feet, chest, face, mouth and genital area. Some of the manifestations of rash can become painful or itchy as with any lesions that occur in the course of the disease.
Some of the other signs may be flu-like symptoms, sore throat, cough that may be accompanied by congestion, fever and chills, muscle aches, fatigue. According to the CDC, in the period of the clade II outbreak in the U.S. in the year 2022 as well as in the subsequent but much lesser incidence, the mpox virus is “still primarily transmitted through direct close sexual and intimate contact, and gay, bisexual, and other men who were having sex with men bear the highest risk of infection. ’’
