Health Breakthrough: Common Medications May Delay Parkinson’s Disease Onset
United States: A recent research study shows that everyday painkillers such as aspirin and ibuprofen alongside cholesterol medication statins combined with blood pressure pills beta blockers might delay the progression of Parkinson’s disease.
Studies posted in the Journal of Neurology showed Parkinson’s symptoms appeared almost ten years later in patients who received these drugs for pain management and high blood pressure or diabetes or elevated cholesterol levels, as reported by HealthDay.

Senior researcher Dr. Michele Tagliati stated in his news release that “The medications we studied have common features that may explain their effect on Parkinson’s disease by controlling inflammation.” At Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles he directs the Division of Movement Disorders while holding the position of vice chair of neurology.
The study collected medical data from Parkinson’s disease patients who received treatment at Cedars-Sinai between October 2010 and December 2021. Patients documented their ongoing medication use through their medical records.

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, which include ibuprofen and aspirin, prolonged the symptom development by 8.2 years.
Individuals who used statins for cholesterol reduction experienced a symptom-onset delay reaching 9.3 years.

Patients taking beta blockers for high BP management experienced their disease onset at 9.6 years later.

Smoking Linked to Earlier Onset
People who smoked cigarettes together with those from families affected by Parkinson’s disease exhibited an earlier onset of symptoms, according to research findings—smoking behavior among patients led to Parkinson’s disease symptoms emerging five years earlier than non-smoking individuals, as reported by HealthDay.
“While additional studies are needed to monitor patients over time, this research suggests that the medications studied also help control the cellular stress response and brain inflammation, which may have a prominent role in delaying the development of Parkinson’s disease,” Tagliati said.
