United States: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have named a listeria outbreak that has caused 10 infections across California and Nevada. The goliaths have been linked to the processing of ready-to-eat products by Fresh & Ready Foods LLC, firm located in San Fernando, California. In answer, the company has selected to recall a few products, as reported by HealthDay.
Widespread Distribution Raises Concern
A wide distribution network has seen recalled items turning up in Arizona, California, Nevada and Washington in retail outlets, hospitals, hotels, airports, convenience stores and airline food services. Because of the widespread distribution, many consumers face the higher risk of of getting the recalled products.
What to Watch For
Symptoms of listeriosis may not appear until up to two weeks after consuming contaminated food.
Common symptoms include:
- Fever
- Nausea
- Muscle discomfort
- Vomiting
Tracing the Outbreak
The initial investigation began in 2023 but yielded no conclusive results. However, in April 2024, the FDA matched listeria strains found in Fresh & Ready Foods samples to those from infected patients, prompting a renewed investigation and recall.

Healthcare Facilities Among Those Affected
Out of the 10 confirmed cases, six individuals had recently been hospitalized prior to falling ill. The FDA confirmed that at least three medical facilities had served Fresh & Ready Foods products, which could have contributed to their exposure.

Fresh & Ready Foods has recalled products with “use by” dates from April 22 to May 19 under the following brand names:
- Fresh & Ready Foods
- City Point Market Fresh Food to Go
- Fresh Take Crave Away
The company has also taken corrective measures, including the removal of implicated equipment, to prevent further contamination.
CDC Timeline & Ongoing Monitoring
Samples collected from illnesses associated with this outbreak were taken between December 2023 and September 2024 according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Monitoring and investigation are ongoing.
