Autism May Begin Showing in Infancy
Parents may identify potential autism in early infancy by monitoring these particular indicators, which researchers unveiled in the journal Pediatric Research.
Current diagnostic methods result in autism detection at ages 3 to 5 years, and researchers state the new diagnostic approach would produce significant progress, as reported by HealthDay.
“What we found was the infants at 9 months who were reported to be fussier had a harder time adapting, more difficulty sleeping, and more delays in achieving developmental milestones were more likely to show signs of early autism by 12 months,” senior researcher Stephen Sheinkopf, a professor of pediatrics at the University of Missouri’s Thompson Center for Autism and Neurodevelopment, said in a news release.
What the Study Looked At
A survey involved 332 parents who reported the behaviors of their 9-month-olds by answering questions about their temperaments and adaptability. Parents noted how often the babies cried and if infants demonstrated irritability and problematic transitions between states or environments.
At age one parents received an autistic spectrum disorder questionnaire to assess how their children used language and reacted to sensory experiences and demonstrated repetitive or restrictive conduct.
The screening evaluated how infants reacted to their names or how they behaved when in the presence of vacuum cleaner noises.
The analysis indicated that early parental evaluations of their infants’ behavioral patterns might enable autism and delay diagnosis at earlier stages than previously possible.
The initial indications shown to researchers cannot yet confirm whether they will result in an official autism diagnosis according to scientists.
The research methods can assist doctors in recognizing babies who require early intervention services while increasing their ability to evaluate infant development according to researchers’ findings.
“Whether it’s helping infants develop language skills closer to their age-expected levels or developing early social skills that will help them thrive in preschool, we want all kids to flourish,” Sheinkopf said.
Researchers track alternative infant behavioral indications together with advanced systems for monitoring crying episodes.
Parents as Experts: Their Observations Matter
The team emphasizes parental descriptions as one of the essential tools for monitoring baby development milestones, as reported by HealthDay.
“Parents are intuitive,” Sheinkopf said. “They are experts on their children, and now we are trying to create better ways of measuring those things that they notice about their kids.”

The research results have met positive acceptance from parents, according to lead investigator Erin Andres, who serves as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Missouri, per the news release.

“Parents will often tell me about conversations they have with their doctor regarding their infant’s crying patterns or difficulty calming down,” Andres said. “They are glad to see that we are researching this topic, and they are very interested in these infant characteristics being measured earlier, too.”
