United States: A specific study finds out that eating processed red meats, such as bacon and hot dogs and many more things which we are not aware about are linked to dementia. Consuming just two servings of processed red meat per week is linked with a nearly 14 percent higher chances of developing dementia as compared to those who eat less than three servings per month.
As reported by HealthDay, Heather Snyder who is from the Alzheimer’s Association says this finding aligns with what experts know about the impact of diet on brain health.
“Prevention of Alzheimer’s Disease and all other dementia is a major focus, and the Alzheimer’s Association has long encouraged eating a healthier diet — including foods that are less processed — because they’ve been associated with probably a lower risk of cognitive decline,” Snyder said in an association news release. “This large, long-term study provides a specific example of one way to eat healthier.”
Expert Insights:
The findings were presented Wednesday at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference in Philadelphia.
Here the new study has been led by Yuhan Li and now a research assistant in the Channing Division of the Network Medicine at the Brigham and the Women’s Hospital in the Boston and she conducted the study while a graduate student at the Harvard T.H.Chan School of the Public Health.
Li’s team pore over 43 years’ worth of the data from 130,000 people in the long running Nurses’ Health Study and the Health Professionals Follow-up Study and the researchers specifically looked at the associations between the red meant intake and dementia.
Study Details:
Every two to four years, participants were quizzed on how much and how often they ate a variety of foods, including processed red meats. A serving from that category could include bacon (two slices), hot dog (one), sausage or kielbasa (2 ounces or two small links), salami, bologna or other processed meat sandwiches.
There are overall 11,173 cases of dementia emerged over the study period.
The main finding: People who said they ate a quarter-serving of more of any form of the processed red meat per day had a 14% higher risk of developing the dementia than those who ate less than 1/10 of a serving daily.
