United States: Study warns that sleep apnea is especially dangerous for the heart health of the young people also for the senior citizens as well. Researchers found that people of between the age group 20 and 40 years old with sleep apnea have very higher chance of the developing heart problems compared to those over 40 years.
For example the young people with this sleep apnea issue having 45 percent of getting high blood pressure and while older people have only a 10 percent higher risk and these particular findings were reported in the journal of the American Heart Association.
Increased Risks of Diabetes and Metabolic Syndrome
As per the experts sleep apnea increased the risk of diabetes by 33 percent in young people as compared with the middle aged people it is 12 percent and the risk of metabolic syndrome by 25 percent versus 7 percent.
As reported in U.S News, Young adults with sleep apnea were also three times more likely to have a cardiovascular event as compared to the elder people, such as a heart attack, heart failure, heart disease, chest pain or stroke – than young adults not suffering from the sleep disorder, results show.
Higher Likelihood of Cardiovascular Events
“The public tends to think of sleep apnea as simply ‘bad sleep’ that causes fatigue, but the implications are far more serious,” lead researcher Bhaskar Thakur, an assistant professor of medicine with the University of Texas Southwestern, said in a news release.
Sleep apnea basically happens when the upper airway collapses during sleep, disrupting a person’s breathing. People wake gasping for air regularly throughout the night, ruining their sleep.
Causes and Risks
The most significant and the major risk factor for this sleep apnea is obesity researchers noted.
“With obesity on the rise, the number of young adults with (sleep apnea) is increasing, and without proper intervention, they are putting themselves at very high risk for a broad range of diseases and conditions,” Thakur said.
Study Details
For the analysis of this the researchers analyzed the data by testing it with 10,000 people 20 and older than that , gathered as a part of a regular federal health survey.
This particular analysis showed that people with sleep apnea symptoms which includes snoring, gasping, interrupted breathing while you’re sleeping, and excessive daytime fatigue and tend to have higher rates of chest pain and heart attack and stroke.
