Breakthrough in RSV Protection for Infants: Nirsevimab Proves Highly Effective

Strong Protection Against RSV Confirmed in Global Study
The research team published in The Lancet Child & Adolescent Health documented that nirsevimab treatment reduced hospitalizations from RSV by 83%.
The results demonstrated that nirsevimab antibody treatment reduced the necessity of intensive care admissions and lower respiratory tract infections by 81% in children under one year old.
The effectiveness of nirsevimab as a hospitalization prevention treatment increased to 81% for infants older than 3 months, according to study findings.
Real-World Validation of Clinical Trial Success
“Our findings indicate that the benefits of nirsevimab observed in clinical trials are also evident in real-world settings, effectively reducing the burden of RSV disease in infants and, consequently, health-care use,” concluded the team led by senior researcher Seyed Moghadas, a professor of computational epidemiology and vaccine science with York University in Ontario, Canada.

The CDC recommends both vaccine protection during pregnancy and antibody treatments for protecting all newborn babies from RSV infection. The protection against RSV passes from mothers to unborn babies when they receive a RSV vaccine during pregnancy and protects newborns through antibody medication.
Nirsevimab received assessment during the 2023-2024 RSV season when researchers analyzed 27 studies carried out across five countries including France, Italy Luxembourg, Spain and the United States.
Study results showed the antibody treatment provided robust protection but created varying effectiveness ratings across different nations.
Effectiveness Varies by Region—U.S. Sees Highest Impact
The protection rate achieved in the United States reached 93%, while Spain reported 83% effectiveness and France obtained 76%.
The research team explained that United States babies may have had a greater risk of severe disease because they received the antibody treatment. The U.S. selected high-risk infants for nirsevimab therapy because this antibody treatment was scarce during the evaluation period, as reported by HealthDay.

“Our findings underscore the importance of infant immunization programs in alleviating the health and economic burden of RSV disease in the high-risk period following birth,” researchers concluded.
